What is a bipolar disorder? How do i deal with it?

A bipolar disorder is a mental health issue which affects your mood. People with a bipolar disorder often can be: Maniac or hypomanic (when you are feeling high / depressive episodes (when you are feeling low). Psychotic symptoms can develop during these episodes

MANIAC DEPRESSION?

The above are known as "mood states". Everyone's mood constantly differs, but in bipolar disorders these mood changes can be very distressing and effect your life. You may feel that your moods are extreme, and that the swings are overwhelming. Depending on their severity, a doctor can diagnose you with a typle of bipolar disorder.

 

Many people have heard of a bipolar disorder but do not fully understand what it is & its diagnosis fully. A large amount of people have misconceptions / negative image of this illness. 

 

The Stigma: When people have a negative image of it this can be very upsetting, especially if someone close to you feels that way.

 

It is extremely important to remember you are not alone and there is support here to help you.

 

  • Show people this information so they understand what you are going through.

  • Know your rights. Research your legal rights on this topic for more info on what you are entitled to as a citizen

  • Get involved in your treatment. Make your voice heard if you do not believe you are receiving ample care. Never feel ostracised by society because of an illness they know nothing about

 

"Bipolar" is how your mood can change between 2 states: Mania & depression. This was previously known as "maniac depression", so you might hear this term as it is still commonly used. Health care professionals also call a bipolar disorder a "bipolar affective disorder".

 

The affective meaning that the disorder is related to mood swings or emotions of a particular person.

Bipolar disorder can be a great teacher. It's a challenge, but it can set you up to be able to do almost anything in life.

Symptoms: You may feel happy, euphoric or a sense of wellbeing // Irritable, agitated and distracted.

You may be have a lot more active than usual, talkative & very friendly // Being rude & aggressive, misusing drugs or alcohol and losing social inhibitions. 

After an episode you may feel ashamed at how you acted and have either clear memories of what just happened or else none at all. 

Psychotic symptoms include delusions & hallucinations. If you feel you experience bipolar episodes you may need to contact a doctor.
